50% Bitcoin: Bill Miller’s Hedge Fund Concentrated on BTC; “Most Alts Worthless”

Veteran hedge fund manager, Bill Miller, recently revealed that one of his funds, MVP 1, has 50% of its investment in Bitcoin – a very concentrated bet by any standards, and a particularly risky one, given Bitcoin’s volatility.
“It’s just about 50 percent right now,” Miller stated, talking about his fund’s Bitcoin investment.
Last year, the former Legg Mason executive with a 35-year track record, found his own firm, Miller Value Partners, which manages over $2.2 billion in assets. This October, it was reported that his MVP 1 fund was worth over $150 million, with a third of it invested in Bitcoin, priced at $6,000 back then.
Bill Miller is no stranger to concentrated portfolios, sharing that in 1990, one of his funds had 20% in AOL, 20% in Dell and 10% in Fannie Mae. However, given Bitcoin’s volatility and inherent risk as an investment instrument, Miller says the fund won’t be dominated by Bitcoin for much longer:
"What we're studying is ways in which we can mitigate risk to the overall fund and the portfolio. It won't be 50 percent of the fund for that much longer, which does not mean necessarily that we're going to be selling it."
Speaking about cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin, the fund manager dismissed them as likely to be worthless in the future:
"Most of those cryptocurrencies, if monetary history is any guide, will be worthless."
While Miller might be right about certain alt coins, it would be wrong to consider Bitcoin the only cryptocurrency worth investing in. Miller’s optimism for Bitcoin may also be due to the fact that he managed to scoop some up with about 1% of his net worth in 2014, when Bitcoin was priced at an average of $350.
Given how it has since surged to $20,000, Miller stands to make 55 times his initial investment, which is an unparalleled gain compared to traditional investments.
